KS1 Live Lesson: Inside the Ballot Box – How Voting Really Works

Event Date:

Event Time:

Event details

Join us for the second Key Stage 1 lesson in our voting series, where pupils explore what happens inside a ballot box and how voting works in practice.

In this session, children will revisit what voting is and remind themselves that everyone gets one vote. They will then learn about ballot boxes and discover that votes can be private. Through discussion and simple questioning, pupils will understand why people do not shout out their choices and how private voting helps everyone make their own decision.

Pupils will take part in a silent digital vote using j2Vote, keeping their choice to themselves while watching the results appear live on screen. This gives children a clear, age-appropriate experience of how private voting works.

To deepen their understanding, pupils will create a picture in JIT Paint showing how voting works. They will draw a ballot box, a folded voting paper, or someone posting their vote, and add a short caption such as “My vote is private” or “A ballot box keeps votes safe.”

By the end of the lesson, pupils will understand what a ballot box is, know that votes can be private, and explain why everyone gets one vote.
